Metallurgy and Metal Processing Wastewater Treatment Chemicals

Products for oily emulsions, slag-washing foam, organic load, nitrogen removal, evaporation and water reuse.

Steel, non-ferrous metal and metal-processing operations generate different wastewater streams from rolling, machining, degreasing, surface preparation, slag washing and utility systems. Common treatment problems include stable oily emulsions, high suspended solids, persistent foam, variable COD, salinity and membrane fouling in reuse systems.

GZXZEP supplies selected products for pretreatment, biological enhancement, foam control, nitrogen removal, evaporation and RO operation. Product selection should follow stream segregation and water analysis because products for oily rolling wastewater, slag-washing circulation water and biological effluent are not interchangeable.

Match Your Treatment Challenge to the Right Product

Treatment challenge Treatment approach Relevant GZXZEP products Application point
Stable rolling-oil or cutting-fluid emulsions Break the emulsion before flotation, sedimentation or biological treatment; select the grade by jar test. OWT Series Emulsion Breaker Equalization or physicochemical pretreatment stage
Persistent foam in slag-washing circulation water Use a nonionic defoamer designed for high-solids circulating systems. XZ8606 Slag-Washing Water Defoamer Circulation tank or return-water line

Emulsion Breaking for Rolling and Machining Wastewater

Rolling oils, cutting fluids, cleaners and surfactants can create stable emulsions that pass through conventional oil separators. Poor emulsion breaking raises oil and COD loading and can destabilize downstream flotation or biological treatment.

The OWT Series Emulsion Breaker is designed for industrial oily wastewater and both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. Grade and dose should be selected by jar testing. The trial should evaluate phase separation, flotation or settling response, supernatant quality and sludge handling rather than relying only on visual clarification.

Foam Control for Slag Washing and Evaporation

High solids, surfactants and intensive circulation can produce persistent foam in slag-washing water. XZ8606 is a modified polyether-ester, nonionic defoamer listed for slag-washing and mineral-processing circulation systems, with a catalog operating temperature up to 50 degrees C.

Where high-salinity wastewater is concentrated by MVR, XZ-0188 is the relevant listed product. It should be metered continuously or intermittently according to foam loading and verified under the actual evaporation conditions. The two defoamers serve different operating environments and should not be substituted without testing.

Biological Support for Organic and Nitrogen Loads

Oil separation and physicochemical pretreatment should remove free oil and reduce inhibitory loads before bioaugmentation is considered. XZ8851 targets hydrocarbon-affected biological systems, while XZ8811 supports broader COD degradation in difficult industrial wastewater.

For nitrogen removal, XZ8821 supports aerobic nitrification and XZ8822 supports anoxic denitrification. NBC-70W liquid carbon source or NBC-44WS sodium acetate may be evaluated when biodegradable carbon is insufficient for nitrate removal. Dosing should follow nitrogen loading and online or routine operating data.

RO Membrane Support for Water Reuse

Metal-processing plants often reuse treated wastewater to reduce freshwater demand and discharge volume. RO performance depends on effective upstream removal of oil, suspended solids, hardness and other scale-forming constituents.

XZ9901 and XZ9902 are antiscalant options; XZ9903 is a non-oxidizing membrane biocide; XZ9905 and XZ9906 are acidic and alkaline membrane cleaners. Selection must be based on feedwater analysis, scale projection, foulant identification and the membrane manufacturer’s chemical limits.

Application Based Evaluation and Technical Support

  1. Separate the wastewater streams. Identify rolling-oil, machining, slag-washing, acidic or alkaline cleaning, biological and reuse streams before selecting chemicals.
  2. Review the water analysis and existing process. Include oil, COD, suspended solids, pH, salinity, hardness, nitrogen and any known inhibitory constituents.
  3. Choose the relevant test. Use emulsion-breaking jar tests, foam tests, biological trials, nitrogen mass balance or membrane-compatibility review as appropriate.
  4. Run a controlled site trial and optimize. Monitor the specific treatment indicator as well as sludge, downstream biological activity and membrane performance.

GZXZEP provides product selection, laboratory evaluation and application support. Final performance depends on wastewater characteristics, process conditions, equipment and site operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which product is suitable for rolling-emulsion wastewater?

Use the OWT Series Emulsion Breaker as the starting product family. Because rolling oils and emulsifiers differ, the grade and dosage must be selected by jar testing on the actual wastewater.

Can XZ8606 be used in an MVR evaporator?

XZ8606 is listed for slag-washing and high-solids circulating water. XZ-0188 is the listed MVR evaporator defoamer. Use the product designed for the operating environment and confirm performance by testing.

Can microbial products replace oil separation?

No. Free oil and concentrated emulsions should be removed through suitable pretreatment. Microbial products may be evaluated for residual biodegradable or hydrocarbon COD after the upstream load is controlled.

Do these products remove dissolved heavy metals?

The current website product list does not include a dedicated dissolved-heavy-metal removal product. Heavy-metal treatment requires characterization, pH and speciation control, and a suitable precipitation or separation program before any product recommendation is made.

What data are needed for an RO chemical recommendation?

Provide the complete feedwater analysis, membrane model, recovery, flow, pressure history, current pretreatment and available foulant or cleaning records. Product selection must stay within the membrane manufacturer’s limits.
